“Blazing Trails in Shark Ray Research and Raising Rescued Loggerhead Sea Turtle Hatchlings”
Jen Hazeres is a Senior Biologist at Newport Aquarium. She helped launch the revolutionary Shark Ray Breeding Program at Newport Aquarium 10 years ago, which has had a global impact on the future of shark rays. Due to the groundbreaking research with shark rays, Jen co-authored a chapter in a renowned Elasmobranch Husbandry Manual- Rhina ancylostoma (shark rays).
Jen started out as a volunteer diver at Newport Aquarium in 2004. Fueled by her passion for conservation, Jen quickly started taking care of penguins and presented conservation talks to guests. Currently, Jen is in charge of the Shore Gallery exhibits, which includes raising a rescued loggerhead sea turtle hatchling every year. Newport Aquarium works closely with the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knolls Shores to rehabilitate a young loggerhead sea turtle and release the sea turtle back into the ocean the following year. Along with raising sea turtles, Jen is in charge of the 385,000-gallon Surrounded by Sharks exhibit.
Jen grew up in Bellevue and returned after spending 14 years in South Carolina. She is married, with three sons. Jen is a graduate of Coastal Carolina University, with a BS in Marine Science. Jen serves as the chair of the Bellevue Board of Education. This is her third term.
